The 2024 Traverse and the 2024 Explorer are three-row midsize crossovers. However, the 2024 Traverse can carry eight occupants in the base LS trim, while the 2024 Explorer only offers seven seats. Moreover, both vehicles offer captain chairs for their second rows. This arrangement is standard for all other trims of the 2024 Traverse and reduces its capacity to seven. Meanwhile, choosing captain chairs for the 2024 Explorer drops its capacity to just six.
Captain chairs are two individual seats for the second row of the vehicle. These two seats can be adjusted separately and have their armrests. They also provide a passage between them for easier third-row access. Captain chairs are a popular option for those seeking more comfort and luxury. They also offer better access and ergonomics.
Furthermore, the 2024 Traverse extends its win in terms of technological features. Both midsize crossovers have Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™, as well as Bluetooth® connectivity. But the 2024 Traverse comes with a standard 11-inch digital instrument cluster. The 2024 Explorer doesn’t offer a digital instrument cluster on any trim.

The engine drives the front wheels on most trims via an 8-speed automatic gearbox. Some trims include steering wheel-mounted shift paddles, which allow for additional control when changing gears. An all-wheel-drive system is optional.
Meanwhile, the Z71 trim includes an advanced twin-clutch all-wheel-drive system as a standard feature. The system can dynamically detect wheel slippage and redistribute torque to wheels with better traction. Furthermore, the Z71 trim includes all-terrain tires, off-road optimized suspension, and terrain-specific driving modes. It also adds tow hooks and underbody skid plates.
The 2024 Explorer range offers two engines. Lower trims get a 2.3-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder unit with 300 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. Higher trims gain a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 with 400 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque. A 10-speed automatic gearbox and rear-wheel drive are standard.
The 2024 Traverse has impressive safety specifications. All trims get automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and lane-keeping assistance. You’ll also find lane departure warning, side blind zone alert, and rear cross-traffic alert. Higher trims can be specified with GM’s SuperCruise hands-free driving system.
The 2024 Explorer isn’t as well-equipped. Some features are standard, but others are optional or not available. However, both midsize crossovers have child safety locks and child seat anchors. They’ve also got tire pressure monitors and a full complement of airbags.
